Citrus jucies were common additions to spirits before the 'modern'
cocktail became popular in the US in the mid-late 1800s. That and sugary
things, because the spirits were often pretty rough.

I understand that the RN allowed sailors to buy lime juice to add to
their grog if the wanted to. How many used their pay for that I don't know.
