Ars Magica has an interesting campaign setup that might serve as a guide. The players take on roles of a covenant of wizards. Each player generates three characters: a wizard, a senior non-wizard (steward, knight, sergeant at arms, etc.) and a servant. For each trip they select a suitable assortment of characters to send. The wizard characters have long term research projects so if a wizard does accompany the group it's either to further their project or they'll be muttering about the interruption.
