It isn't mysterious at all; it creates a wormhole and essentially
bridges the gap between two locations.  As for how much power it uses,
that's never really specified.  It could require a minimal amount of
power or the tylium fuel could simply be so energetic that it puts to
shame anything in the Traveller universe.
