The hydrazine(?) that was the other component of the fuel was just as
nasty.

*Either* of the fuels would dissolve large chunks of the pilot if
there was a leak.

Add in the fact that they were hypergolic (ie the two components
ignited on contact with each other) and it's a wonder that they lost
as few pilots as they did.
