A two-fold request: Food! Jeff Zeitlin 08 Nov 2025 17:09 UTC

Recently, someone made a comment on what's left of the Traveller IRC to the
effect that the foods "served" by the 'bot I run there are boring and
conventional, not Traveller-sf-nal. They're right; it's a clone of the menu
for the 'bot I run in Libera's "Callahan's" channel, which is kinda boring
and badly needs expanding and variety, but is strictly for the real world.

However, the two menus need to diverge (and expand, both). So, I've come
here to ask for ideas for the Traveller-sf-nal menu; I'll work on other
sources for the Callahan's 'bot menu.

What I need for the 'bot: Essentially, a one-line description of a meal -
for example, the typical 'chrome diner' burger might be described as

"A jumbo beefburger on a toasted bun, served with lettuce, tomato, fries,
onion rings, and your choice of cheese (including none)"

Of course, while I won't turn down conventional items like the above, I'm
looking for the sort of thing that you might find travelling among the
stars, where most of the people (of whatever species) you encounter can eat
much the same sorts of things you and I do, but from their own ecosystems,
so

"crottled greeps, served in dahask broth, with a side of steamed
brask-rind"

is perfectly OK.

I said two-fold above because if you can provide a recipe that can "fake"
the dish using present-day Earth ingredients and cooking methods, and
results in something edible, I'll also put it in the Freelance Traveller
cookbook. (Of course, if you can also provide the "native" version of the
recipe [in English], I'll include that for a more complete recipe/article.)
