Because of the timing of TravellerCON/USA (and to a lesser extent that of
TravCon UK), and because of the delay in getting the September/October 2025
issue out (partly due to my get-up-and-go deciding I wasn't good company,
so it got up and went), I'm running somewhat behind schedule on getting the
November/December issue of Freelance Traveller to press. I am not
anticipating being as late with this issue as I was with last issue, and I
am hoping to make up enough time that I'll be able to get back on schedule
for January/February 2026. I'm not making any promises, though.
Having said that, I will also say that there's still time to send me stuff
for the November/December issue. All the departments can use expansion, but
I'd especially like to see reviews (there's so much out there to review,
both from Mongoose and from third parties), adventures (both long form and
short form [Getting Off the Ground]), and animal and plant encounters.
Please, write and send!
Focussing on topic rather than department, there are definitely two theme
issues in the pipeline:
* The first, which is intended for September/October 2026, is "The Fifth
Frontier War" to match the intended theme of TravellerCON/USA. Ideally,
material within this theme won't be locked to specific events of the war;
rather, some of the war's "side stories" can be looked at - partisan
activity on an occupied world (either Imperial partisans fighting
Outworld Coalition occupiers or vice-versa), espionage and other
intelligence activities (again, either side), "slice of life" stories
about civilians on either side, and so on. While adventuring should be
fun for the players (not necessarily for the characters), "war stories"
should show the darker side of Clausewitz's "continuation of politics by
other means".
* The second, which will be inserted into the stream of issues when there's
enough material to make a good theme issue, is "Religion". Not any
_specific_ religion, but just articles of any type that can show how
religion can fit into a Traveller story or campaign, if a group doesn't
deem the idea "too sensitive/touchy/etc". Rules for generating a
religion, descriptions of religions (but please don't make them seem like
"California cult-of-the-week" silliness [which generally includes turning
popular entertainers into objects of worship]). Some present-day major
religions may have aspects that seem incompatible with an interstellar
society; you might want to explore ideas on how those aspects might
change as a society changes from planetbound to interstellar. That's OK,
too, but _always_ treat _any_ religion - real or fictitious - with
respect.
