My guess is that in the modern British Army, RN, RAF, RM, for the Heir
Apparent or Heir Presumptive, they're unlikely to go into harm's way,
although if said Heir kicks up enough of a fuss, they might put him in a
not-so-obviously-protected situation, where there is real soldiering to do,
but it's unlikely to be fatal. I do recall that one of HRH's sons actually
did fly choppers in rescue situations (though I think it was civvie-side,
rather than for the Armed Forces).

Basic Training _might_ be a little more deferential than for the
run-of-the-mill grunt, but not too obviously... "Drop and give me twenty!
...Sir."

If they go in with the attitude of seriously wanting to serve, just like
any other citizen, or view it as necessary and appropriate in order to be a
good leader (which the Royals are, even if a large part of their leadership
is symbolic rather than operational), then getting a seriously watered-down
experience would be a Bad Thing, and would lose the respect of those they
are supposed to be serving alongside.

Respect from those who serve does not come to someone who is entitled to
wear the uniform by virtue of some honorary title tied to social rank; it
_does_ come to someone who is so entitled _if_ they are seen to truly be
willing to "get down in the dirt" with those who serve, and thus honor the
uniform they wear. And it doesn't really matter if you get into the Army's
dirt but have a Navy title by association with your royal rank, it's the
fact that you've been "in the dirt" that matters.

Or at least that's my American take on the imagery...
