IIRC the main purpose of the double island configuration was redundancy, at least when it was first mooted for CVF.  Back in those discussions, the concept drawings were of a bunker-style aft island, not the ugly twin they have now.

The double-island configuration was on the table when the USN was designing the GERALD FORD, but they decided moving back the island further aft was a better choice.

One thing about the Queen Elizabeth class is that they are also suppose to carry troops, up to a battalion.  But I am not sure whether it is a good idea to drive a 70k ship on just two screws, or having two aircraft elevators.

I remember hearing, when the design was first announced, that the twin island configuration gave better aerodynamic (probably not the correct word, but I can't think of anything else appropriate) properties across the flight deck. I assume the size is all part of the same thing.

I find the, apparently, large size of the islands intriguing. Each one appears to be larger than the single one that the USN has on it's CVN's.

I wonder why there's such a difference in size?

If it is the captain saying that, I have to wonder if the captain was trying to put it in layman's terms.

Taking a look the specs, USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH displaces significantly more - but the differences in overall dimensions are much smaller.

Also, while running actual ship operations requires only around 700 people, they clearly are not including the number of people need to run the air group.

The double island configuration looks ugly as sin.

Well, the things spinning the big wheels at the back are electric
motors (just like
CV-2, Lexington had a few decades ago). The prime movers are gas turbines
and diesel engines (instead of a nuke plant).

...just clarifying.

I wouldn't disagree, but that was the exact description given.

By the captain I think, without rewatching it, rather than the narrator or something.

There was something in part 1 about it having unusual - and highly dangerous if water got in - (very) high voltage cables snaking through engine room. Next episode there was a flood. They were very very cautious about dealing with it...
