Thank you.  Though I'm not sure I'm much clearer.

It might be to do with the odd line starts that I presume are some characters not displaying.

I had assumed that a Blades in the Dark gear list would ID (or at least include) what 'space' each item takes up. Perhaps in 'units'.

Eg
Book/handgun - 1 unit
Rifle - 2 units
Comm - 1/4 unit

And then you fill up to your load.

No?

and the Blades in the Dark suggestion from Phil sounds intriguing.  Not sure I could see how you knew what gear took what space in the 'load' though.  It's not on the page and I looked at the SRD and couldn't see it there either.

Yeah. Unfortunately a lot of the rules live on the character sheets. The Playbook (class) specific gear is one such thing and they are not a part of the SRD.

For creating a playbook gear list the SRD has:

Character items
Add a list of five distinctive items that are either Fine (+1 quality), light (reduced load), rare, or otherwise specific to this character.
Some examples include: Weapons, clothes, arcane implements, specialized tools, custom gear, capable pets, or supernatural objects.

The cutter's (fighter/muscle playbook) gear section looks like this:
 Fine hand weapon
 Fine heavy weapon
 Scary weapon or tool
 Manacles & chain
 Rage essence vial
 Spiritbane charm

And the standard gear list is:
 A Blade or Two
 Throwing Knives
 A Pistol  A 2nd Pistol
A Large Weapon
 An Unusual Weapon
Armor +Heavy
 Burglary Gear
Climbing Gear
 Arcane Implements
 Documents
 Subterfuge Supplies
Demolition Tools
 Tinkering Tools
 Lantern
