There's a lot in the way of period pieces across the board. I have difficulty telling if it's my own perception or a generally shared perception but role playing games as a whole are starting to feel like a phase that western civilization went through.

What is this century's SF? We've had occasional blips of things like Jupiter Rising, which felt last century SF to me. The Martian feels like modern scifi, acceptance of the laws of the universe as they are but still able to imagine a little, but that might have been a one-off. As I mentioned before, I liked the Revelation Space universe which was nearly completely slower than light, but I'm not sure how well that would translate into SF RPG.

Guilds in SF does seem outdated, because to me it feels like as society advances we are moving toward a population of unguilded freelance specialists rather than toward guilds defined by specialization.

What would an ideal modern SF RPG look like?

IMO, FTs - and all the associated stuff with the Machinists Guild, the
Hydroponicists Guild, the Reactormen's Guild, etc etc - are something
that feels very last-century's-SF to me. Then again, Traveller itself
seems (to me) more and more like a period piece with every passing year,
so I suppose that fits. :/
