Well there *was* the little 'fig leaf' caveat in the text about how, after the big die-off, the AI's left-in-charge concluded that space travel made no sense.

Following that dictum to the letter after thousands & thousands of years adds new meaning to the term; "It's carved in stone"!

p.s. the key to survival apparently lies in saying the 'Magic Word'. In this case it's a phrase that appears to be, "Take us to your Leaders"! ;-)
