It is hinted at in both MAM 1 and funny fish, this is the case. Hence their use of OHV almost unaltered from the Zira Sirka and the preservation of art forms now lost to mainstream Vilani culture. It's intended as the ultimate irrational irony of the Luriani prejudice against the Vilani. The modern Vilani culture they fear isn't the culture of the ZS while the Mmarislusant they actively embrace retain far more of that culture.

Dear Jeff,

My 2 centicredits ...

You could (if you wanted) realistically portray the Mmarislusant as hyper-traditionalist, glomming on to obscure and never terribly prevalent Vilani traditions, then turning those traditions up to 11.  Thus they can distinguish themselves from the majority Luriani culture.

In the Australian context, it is widely recognised that the large Greek-Australian community define themselves using a set of cultural practices that bear little or no relationship to contemporary life in Greece.  Instead, it is an ossified and exaggerated version of what Greek culture might have looked like in the late 1800's.

Similarly, consider the factors and practices that have continued to define "Jewishness" despite prolonged exposure to a majority culture.

From a gaming POV, there is potential comedy value in having a Mmarislusant, an inhabitant of Vanejin, and an office holder in the Restored Ziru Sirka bickering over what makes a "true" Vilani.

And I have mentioned, many years ago, that I don't see the pre-Ziru Sirka Vilani as being particularly conservative or reactionary.  No more so than the Romans, anyway.

It's generally accepted - either in canon, or from discussion here in the

fief, with the first becoming a shugili and the second going into the

You didn't discuss that, as I recall, in Minor Alien Module 1: Luriani, but
the implication, from that module and from the Funny Fish stories, is that
the Mmarislusant maintain Vilani culture and traditions within the Luriani
cultural context.

Question - and this is for some commentary on an article that I'm working
on about inheritance and familial power patterns:

Do the Mmarislusant maintain the Vilani traditions to that extent, or
have they assimilated to the Luriani and follow Luriani expectations
regarding heritage of title, fief, and familial archony?
