I *had* read the article.  The article is unclear on how much of this actually exists vs. how much is just a design on paper.  It's also unclear on the use of 'seed' vs. 'seedling', which are not the same thing.

Actually covered if you follow the links. These are real world items
used for planting trees via airdrop from things like C-130s. and not
flying nap of the earth.

They are designed to prevent that sort of shock.

True, designing the equivalent for orbital drop would be a lot
harder, but I'd probably try bundling a big lot of them into a rentry
package that'd break up and spread them over an area once they got to
the right altitude.
