One thing I always liked about TOS;
The Capt sat at a 'center seat'.
Never really thought about the significance of the L-R arrangement of the helmsman & navigator.
I always figured that they were backups for each other anyway.

Besides being an outstanding show and doing Trek in a way that hasn't
been done since the original series went off the air, it also has some
Vilani influence...  Both the captain and the helmsman sit on the right,
rather than the left as is traditional on "Earth" craft that we've seen
in the past.
