I think you missed a simple "nothing much happened" trick with the mine . . .

You could have simply had the lights flicker, then fail. Let the PCs panic (maybe even start shooting), then after a few seconds game time have the lights flicker back on and remain lit. And nothing AT ALL further takes place.

If they investigate, there was a momentary power surge than caused some automatic breakers to trip, then reset after a brief system self-check. :)

Oooh, wish I'd thought of that.  Very nice.  Definitely missed a trick there.  Bit then, I often do as I reflect on an adventure session afterwards.

Well, I say reflect.  More, beat-myself-up-because-I-can-see-the-imperfections - even when intellectually I know perfectly well it went OK at least and everyone had fun.

(My apologies for the slow reply.  I've just been through my busiest week of the year with loads of lectures to the new students and some of the returning ones as well)

(Best moment was in a Direct Entry to 3rd year group who had a high proportion of international students.  I had a bit of time so I thought I'd start by getting them a bit engaged while the PC logged in.  I got a couple of them to say where they were from and a French guy in the front row spoke up.  Easy peasy. I could welcome him in French and trot out a 'my French is rubbish'.  Then two Germans spoke up. Again, easy and I could do similar.  Then a Korean girl put a hand up rather shyly and she fell out of her chair with surprise when I could greet her and say 'where's the toilet?'.  So after that it became a bit a challenge and two Africans smugly put their hand up and told me they came from Nigeria.  No chance of being able to respond to that I could see their eyes saying.  Hah!  I just happened to have lived there for a year so could manage a fair bit of Hausa even though they came from the south not the north.  I think I impressed them...!) (Though I did luck out with the countries and I didn't own up to having no more than the odd phrase in some languages)
