Morning PDT all,

Oops, my apologies for not being clear in my earlier reply.

1. In CT Book 2 Starships 1e 1977 page 10 the Hulls Types (Standard Hulls CT Book 2 Starships 2e 1977/1981) lists the build times while Maximum Drive Potential table does not have the Build Time column that is shown on CT Book 2 Starships 2e page 22. The second edition Build Time column on the Drive Potential matches the first edition Hull Types Time column numbers for 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 d-tons.

2. Custom hulls in both CT Book 2 Starships 1e page 20 and 2e page 20 Building Ships "1. Custom hulls with mass displacements other than the hull sizes shown on the drive potential table are treated as the next larger size. The maximum hull possible in these rules is 5,000 tons".

In my opinion the CT Book 2 Starships 2e Standard Hulls table on page 22 reflects the material under the Standard Ship Design Plans detail of "The following ships are standard designs available at almost any shipyard."

Ships built using "standard design plans"  CT Book 2 Starships 2e page 18 use the "Standard Hulls" table Time column on CT Book 2 Starships 2e page 22.

Hulls not using the CT Book 2 Starships 2e "standard design plans" use the Drive Potential table's Build Time column on p. 22.

The CT Book 2 Starships 2e Standard Hulls for 100, 200, 400, and 600 tons get the benefits of both reduced pricing and construction time. 800 and 1,000 ton hulls have reduced build times but cost Cr100,000 per ton.

The hull tons listed on the Drive Potential Table are "standard tonnages" that do not get reduced construction times. The question I've had for both CT Book Starships 1e and 2e is do the 100, 200, 400, and 600 ton hulls get the Standard Hulls price reduction or do they cost Cr100,000 per ton?

Dear Folks -

Jeff asked:

[paraphrase: do I use "standard hull" times or "drive potential" times, or
both?]

You use one or the other, depending on whether you are using a standard or
custom hull.

"Construction Times: Time required for building any vessel depends primarily
on the hull. The drive potential table indicates construction time for each
tonnage of hull; any hull over the indicated tonnage requires the next
higher construction time. The standard hulls table gives shorter
construction times for those hulls; they are more familiar to the shipyard
and easier to build."
(Bk 2, p 12)

"The Hull:
[...]
The standard hulls table shows six standard hulls which are available at
reduced prices and construction times. Any other hull must be produced on a
custom basis at a cost of MCr0.1 per ton; minimum price MCr20. Construction
(or build) times for custom hulls are shown in the last column of the drive
potential table."
(Bk 2, p 13)

For example:
- if the design is based on a standard 100 ton hull, it will take 9 months
to build (Bk 2, STANDARD HULLS table, p 22)
- if the design is based on a custom 100 ton hull, it will take 10 months to
build (Bk 2, DRIVE POTENTIAL table, p 22)

FWIW, notice that this *replaces* the original 1977 rule, as quoted by Tom
Rux: "Standard designs take about one month less than the stated time." My
guess is that this rule was removed in favour of the definitive column in
the DRIVE POTENTIAL table. In this new column, for example, a custom 800 ton
hull takes 28 months vs 25 for the standard hull (3 months more). Stating it
explicitly in this column means you no longer have to guess.  ;-)
