Oh, and after a bath how about
d) a severe sandstorm is known to be blowing in in a couple of days - which also gives the PC something to deal with!

And I know I said 'unfrequented' and mentioned the possibility of nomads in my previous post but a) they're little known and b) they're well out of range (for good reasons which may become apparent)
