I’ve not yet read the final version of the 2nd Edition, but I was quite pleased with the way that it was presented. Very much a cleaned up approach.

As an aside, when I did some work on High Guard for first edition(*), it was originally intended to have it as one design volume, duplicating the elements in the core book in a single volume. Unfortunately that never happened. The new approach makes sense, although it is a shame there’s no design sequence. It was one of the first things that I did when I bought Starter Edition back at the start of the 1980s.

(*)bizarrely credited in Scouts (!)

Hello Carlos,

My apologies if my remarks concerning the compatiability
between the first edition  and second edition of the
Core Rulebook was less than encouraging. I thought
I mentioned that I was not very well versed in
anything but the Spacecraft Design chapter. There
are bits and pieces that I checked out while going
through Spacecraft Design in the rest of the book.

I have purchased the MgT Core Rulebook 2e PDF and
have been slowly, mainly because I'm bouncing around
on different projects, comparing it with the first edition.

Overall the two appear to be compatible for everything
except Spacecraft Design, which in the second edition
has been moved o High Guard 2 edition.

In MgT Core Rulebook 2e there is a flowchart that
outlines how to generate a character which, in my
opinion, is an improvement over the first edition.

My comparison of the two core rule books is going
slowly because I'm bouncing between other self
imposed projects.

I prefer paper copies to PDF, however I've
discovered that it is easier to make changes in
the PDF or to download an updated copy.

Overall I like MgT which is why I'm waiting for
HG and whatever other books the create second
editions for.

Thanks, Tom and Evyn---that's enough info for a decision, if not exactly encouraging.

1) Is this a "dead" product or is there an actual ongoing line in the works? I ask because I've seen hints at a "Companion" and a comment on Starship-gen rules being moved to a second book, but I've failed to find any further product, and there are clear hints that the 1stEd rules supplements are not 100% compatible with this one.

It's live, just moving as fast as they thought it would.

By an and Large 1st and 2nd are largely compatible with each other and CT, as Character generation and the Task and Skills system are largely unchanged (the only really strong sections from mongoose)

As usually the technical sections are only marginal, they changed Vehicles and Starships for no real improvement of play (I was in the middle of the Playtest arguing with three different people Plus Matt about Damage scales the needly complexity is all them... 9-( )

2) Do the changes 1stEd/2ndEd have any bearing in the Mongoose Settings? That is, will there be a MgT:2300AD 2nd Ed, or is this inconsequential due to a separation Rules/Setting?

There discussion of a new main Rule Book.....

3) Are the "Third Imperium" setting products of Mongoose worth it for somebody who has a decent ClassicT/MT/Gurps:T library?

While they are amusing in places, MgT is looking to never have a complete range there. (with the death on one of the unfinished manuscripts author and the edition change and all...)

Would I buy the Dead Tree Edition? No... PDF, sure....
