When I was playing actively, we were in a game set entirely on a scout base, looking for an artifact consealed there by another scout team...recently deseased.

The base was originally a makeshift illegal mining site reclaimed by the Navy.

Next to arrive were a scientific team because of a contact with a TL2 sapient natives.

The Scout Service then inherited the site though it was only authorised for a temporary installation rather than a permanent one, so almost everything was pre-fab offloaded off a chartered transport rather than purpose built by the Service's own supporting organisation.

To add to our problems, not only did a small native settlement existed offbase just outside the perimeter, but there was a shantytown of sorts with various opportunists and other 'types' typical of the regions on the edge of the Imperium.

Due to the temporary nature of the installation, all other facilities were likewise intended for temporary operating support., and only of a reduced base capability of three scout crews at any one time, i.e. the minimum possible. We were #2, supposedly just returned for R&R while #1 was supposed to be preping for departure (and did, permanently), and #3 was out there, scouting.

Our problems started from disembarking. The base's automated security authenticated the scout's security on docking, but would not recognise our personal security IDs, so we were fired on when trying to leave the vessel.

Didn't actually learn what the adventure was about until we made it aboard the other scout.

By the way, not all our PCs were scouts. One was a mining tech who was initially part of the group detained by the Navy, and was working to earn enough to get home by exploiting personnel shortages in the Service. Another PC was a woman with astounding science skill set given the location, who arrived with the chartered ship as 'cargo' and stayed for undisclosed reasons. Another was a Navy NCO who seemingly took a paycut to be assigned to this particular base.

I'm interested in the sort that would be around as the IISS expands
into a new area. Something able to do some repairs and maintenance
but not a big port either.
