Hmmmm. Your/Your PC's reaction is both understandable and predictable, which means a referee should be prepared for that. Let's see: (1) the job was offered in the usual PCs Starport bar, and when they go checking for the official after surviving the first adventure, there is n orecord of such official. Or (2) the job was offered in the dependencies of the Imperial Navy Surplus Directorate, and when the PCs go there, they find empty office space with no record of occupation in the last six months; besides, the INSD does not exist...
...and a hunt starts, with the PCs getting a nice side motivation to dig into a possible conspiracy while your regularly scheduled adventures unfold.

Howdy again Carlos,
I need to make a little clarification to my earlier response as
"My reaction in real life or as a Traveller character, provided I survived, would be very negative and I do bare grudges, my first target was the official who gave me the assignment."
In real life I would hold a grudge and by targeting officials I mean trying to get them convicted in a court of law, which probably means I'm the one on the losing end. In the TU I, if my dice rolls are good, get to do a lot more and survive. With my luck however, my character will be another NPC.
