Also you get greater efficiency and performance if you move the motors to the drive wheels; infinitely variable traction control and zero transmission losses, more so if you go with AWD.
ISTR that Steve Jackson's Car Wars posited something like that for the cars.
Or possibly electric-hydraulic, with the wheels driven by hydraulic flow to minimize unsprung weight, and individual pumps at each wheel.
Or I might be thinking of something else entirely. :)
