I got the impression that the battery only ran the electronics, and motive power is supplied directly by the horse via a gearbox.
 
So, it is not a horse on a treadmill to a gearbox powering a generator charging a battery powering an electric motor which moves the car.
 
It's just a horse on a treadmill to a gearbox which moves the car.
(Unless, of course, I'm wrong....)
