I just checked the only asteroid impact scenario I could think of William H Keith Jrs' "Critical Vector" from JTAS 20 and the idea of the asteroid being guided by someone else does not appear in it, one wonders how many other 'Armageddon' like scenarios there are?

I dug up that one last night and while it was the one I was thinking of, you're absolutely correct in that there's no ship there. I still seem to recall something that GDW published that included a ship shadowing an asteroid that was in line to hit a planet. I may have misread as it's been since Clinton's first term that I really studied my old Traveller books.
