Er.  In the vacuum of space, why would you *need* to fin-stabilize rounds?

I mean, it's not like there's a cross wind....

You have to fin-stabilize because otherwise the perturbations of the sabot dropping away (it never happens *exactly* evenly) induce oscillations in the trajectory of the round.
