In line with what somebody upthread said, that sounds a lot like something from Shadowrun. The published adventures for that game routinely featured Patron doublecrosses and/or hidden agendas that my players came to regard the initial up-front payment as all the nuyen they were ever likely to get from that particular Mr. Johnson . . .
