Recently I was perusing a Uniform Guide that Mollo wrote for the Armies of WWII & I came across what appears to me to be an interesting inconsistency concerning the wearing of the kilt by highland regiments for everyday duty.
An illustration appears showing, in 1939, a lance-corp of the Black Watch on sentry duty wearing a standard regimental kilt along w/ otherwise typical khaki uniform.
However, I recall reading an early booklet from the Osprey series ( before they even printed title numbers on the spine!) that covered the Argyll & Sutherland highlanders in which it was stated that the highland regiments 'lost' their 'working' kilts, except for ceremonial dress purposes, in the mid-'30's as a cost-saving measure. A picture of the last parade-review, by the battalion based in the UK,  w/ kilts was shown. I recall, the book is in storage so I can't easily double-check, that it was mentioned that this policy was applied to ALL the highland regiments at that time.

If anyone, esp those of you 'across the pond', have any info wrt to this issue, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
