I like the idea that he is not interested in impressing people in his office with pictures of his past accomplishments.  The pictures and mementos are there for _him_.  There are no captions on any of the pictures, and if someone casually asks about a memento, he just replies. "Oh, that's something I picked up somewhere.

If they happen to impress visitors, that's just an additional benefit.

The Sten series is one that is must reading for anyone into Traveller.  The technology is quite different, but the fit, feel, and chrome would be very familiar.
