A 500k dton ship with 4 m between decks would total 1.7 km^2 of "deck
area".  I expect most of it would be taken up with enormous equipment
that crosses through multiple levels though.

At 100:1 (which is close to 15mm), the plans would take up at least
170 m^2.  Rather more once you account for margins and annotations.
For a roughly spherical ship most of the deckplan levels would be
about 2 to 2.5 metres across, and there would be something like 60
levels.

Splitting it up into A4 pages, there would be up to 100 pages per deck
level for a total of about 5000 pages.  That certainly qualifies as
H-U-G-E in my book!

That is one of the great features of modern living. I can do a 5000 page book and publish it for almost nothing! If I were to do this project I think I would use SVG (inkscape) and I would do each onion like level using traveller world d20 maps.
