I've just found a YouTube video demonstrating a pulse laser (Used for tattoo removal) that can be purchased from eBay. Aside from showing just how dangerous the thing is, the person who made the video gives a good explanation on how the lasers work.

If nothing else it 'ground truths' things like laser pistols...
