Mission of Gravity, Hal Clement

I remember this one especially fondly. The high-G alien natives are built like monstrous centipedes: heavily-armored, low-to-the-ground and LOTS of locomotive limbs (to spread out their weight as much as possible).  There's one especially dramatic moment where the protagonist risks serious injury or even death, simply by lifting part of his torso off the ground. Also, Clement writes at least half of the story in first-person from the alien protagonist's POV . . . and he sounds just like your typical blue-collar worker.
