I could think of a whole of a lot of ways to 'start over' w/o bringing in something  a silly as 'Virus'.
The howls of dismay that reverberated across the TML at that time, says it all!

Or, you know, cleaning up a mess not worth trying to fix, and starting
over. Me, I prefer it to having a bunch of successor states all claiming
to be the 'true Imperium', and playing 'The Cold War in Space' just like
the pre-Rebellion Solomani-Imperium border, but with smaller polities.
Or maybe just 'Hard Times forever', because that's what leaving the
factions in place means.
