GDW lost me when they killed Strephon and didn't get me
back until GURPS Traveller said it was all a [TV "Dallas"] bad
dream.

I remember going to Race-O-Rama at the Queensgate Shopping Center
and seeing the newest issue of Traveller's Digest. I bought it and
sat in the car reading and it was the gaming equivalent of watching
the news when Reagan was shot. For my entire gaming experience,
Strephon had been Emperor and there was no warning that things
weren't going well. Then, Dulinor shows up and stinks up the
place. The best part about TNE was when the infected combine ran
him over.
The idea of a fractured Imperium had some appeal, it certainly
opened the doors for different adventures within the core sectors.
However, it seemed to me that other than some very minor border
issues and the Solomani, the event pretty much happened in a
vacuum. I would have expected the Vargr and K'kree to make serious
attempts at gaining border worlds but all we saw was minor
skirmishing.
