     Helen:

     Here's how all this is sorted out in our records so far:

     1) The numbered series: "Plants & gardens" ceased with v. 49,
     no. 4 (winter 1993), to be continued by the unnumbered series:
     "21st century gardening series."

     2) Many issues (but not all I think?) in these series also belong to
     the numbered series: "Handbook" (also called:  "World's best
     illustrated garden and horticultural handbooks", and: "World's most
     extensive gardening book series", etc.), which is still active.

        For example, "Handbook" # 137 is v. 49:4 of "Plants &
        gardens", while Handbook # 141 is the 1994 issue of "21st century
        gardens" (with title: "Shrubs, the new glamour plants")

     Additional complications: Some issues not carrying "Handbook" title
     and numbering are nevertheless numbered in that series in lists in
     later issues.

     Also, while I cannot find any record of nos. in the "Handbook" series
     which are not also in "P & g" or "21st ..." (so, it's probably better
     to term it a subseries), I have found that selected issues are also
     available as reprints (called "special printing" or "special edition")
     in a separate series with title: Magazine-Handbook and ITS own
     numbering and these reprints also carry with them -- what else? -- the
     "Plants & gardens" title and issue numbering of their original
     manifestations, although they cannot properly be said to be
     issues in that series. This practice seems to have stopped in the late
     '70s.

     3) As to treatment, checkin, etc.: We classed "Plants &
     gardens" together as a set for some of our branch libraries,
     and separately as monographs for others (and therefore, items
     in the "Handbook" subseries followed suit). After the title
     change, we class "21st century ..." as separates. As with all
     unnumbered series received here on standing order, we check each issue
     in by recording briefly its author/title and its imprint date, and
     we'll claim with messages like " ... anything published since 'Shrubs,
     the new glamour plants' in 1994" and so on.

     As we receive more issues of the new title, we may start to get a
     different picture, but that's the way things stand now. If you would
     like me to send you copies of our MARC-tagged records for any of these
     titles, please advise:

     - Bibliographic serial record for "Plants & gardens" (we do not
     make such records for titles we class separately, such as "21st
     century ...")

     - Series Authority Records for:

                     - "Plants & gardens"
                     - "21st century gardening series"
                     - "Handbook (Brooklyn Botanic Gardens)"
                     - "Magazine-Handbook"

     Also, please let me know if I've missed something here, if you
     have another piece of the puzzle, or if you have further
     questions, etc.

I'm a little confused, and hope someone may be able to give me some advice:

For some years now we have been receiving "Plants and gardens" (ISSN
0362-5850), as part of a membership to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. Issues
were also numbered as part of their "Handbook" series, although that's not
really a problem. Each issue has an individual title as well, and that's not
really problem either as we're going to move them from our serials
collection to the book collection.

The problem is that with v. 49, no. 4 (winter 1993), the numbering ceased
and they don't call them "Plants and gardens anymore". Each issue still has
an individual title and isbn, as well as the issn for "Plants and gardens".
Some of them (2 of 3 received) are still also numbered as "Handbook". There
is also the series title: "21st-century gardening series" which is only
printed on the last page (subscription info) and the back cover. They are
not numbered anywhere  for that series.

Because we pay a membership to get these we need to have a checkin
established, to take care of claiming (they're quarterly). I'm concerned
that when they come in through the mail they probably won't get recognised
as a serial and will end up being processed as a comp. (unsolicited) order
for the book collection, which of course ends up in needless claims.

I have checked the New Zealand Bibliographic Network (NZBN) which takes
records from LC and other places, and the record for "Plants and gardens"
hasn't had any changes made to it at all. There are monographic records for
the issues of the new title, with tracings for "21st century gardening
series", but no serial record for it. There isn't a serial record for the
"Handbook" series either. Is there a title change to "21st century gardening
series", or has "Plants and gardens" been absorbed by the "Handbook" series?

Is there anybody out there who takes this series and is willing to let me
know how they've dealt with it?  (I realise the mail sorting problem is ours
to work on, but would like to touch base with somebody else about the title
anyway).
