BEING AN INFORMATION PROVIDER ON THE INTERNET
Instructor: Peter Liebscher, Long Island University SLIS
Date: Thursday, Mar. 30th
Location: Washington, DC
Time: 9:00-12:00
OR Thursday, Mar. 30th
Time: 1:00-4:00
Cost: $90.00 (CAPCON Full or Affiliate members);
$115.00 (Others)
Although library catalogs were some of the earliest information
resources available of the Internet, information specialists
generally view the Internet as a finding tool, rather than as
a vehicle to make new information resources and services
available to clients. These seminars will examine both the
opportunities and the challenges that organizations face when
becoming active information providers on the Internet. Topics
covered will include technical requirements, costs, and how to
match information resources with appropriate network software.
The morning session will emphasize library resources; the
afternoon session will look more broadly at opportunities for
other types of organizations to mount data on the Internet.
Because some material will be common to both sessions,
registrants should sign up for only one session. (.3 CEUs)

INTERFACING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Instructor: Richard W. Boss, Library Automation Consultant and
Author

As the number of available electronic resources proliferates,
librarians chafe at the need to maintain multiple terminals or
workstations for accessing disparate systems. Advancements in
networking technologies are providing new ways to tap into
diverse sources from a single station, but equipment, cabling
and software must all interface correctly to achieve the goal
of one central point of access. Instructor will address
hardware specifications, memory requirements, menu packages,
cabling requirements, network software, applicable standards
for various network topologies (Ethernet and Token Ring),
protocols (TCP/IP and OSI), Z39.50 client/server applications,
and strategies for maintaining vendor liability for performance
guarantees in networked environments. (.6 CEUs)

As libraries strive to improve the quality of their services
and become more responsive to the needs and demands of their
users, they must establish mechanisms to plan and evaluate
their programs and services. This one-day workshop offers an
introduction to measuring and assessing organizational
performance. Participants will examine a systems model of
organizational performance to explore ways to improve service
and overall performance; learn how to use available resources
effectively through a strategic planning process that includes
making choices about what not to do as well as what to do; and
identify ways to assess the effectiveness of current programs
and services in light of established goals and practices.

Statistics, when used properly, provide useful insights into
library operations and management, and can be a powerful tool
both in planning for effective service delivery and for
documenting library accomplishments. This workshop will
outline basic research and statistical techniques, describe how
to integrate research, data gathering, and the use of
statistics into library decision making and planning, and help
participants understand how and when to use descriptive and
inferential statistics and basic forecasting tools. Examples
will focus on library-relevant statistical terms, how to define
data sets for statistical collection, and how to compile and
present statistical data as useful information. Participants
should bring a calculator for class exercises. (.5 CEUs)

LIBRARY LIABILITY ISSUES

Recent headlines have shown that however much librarians think
of themselves as laboring for the public good, libraries are
not infrequent targets of lawsuits. The range of potential
liability is wide, encompassing not only copyright
infringement, censorship battles, and "information malpractice"
complaints, but personal injury, equal access, privacy issues
and labor disputes. This workshop is designed to help managers
minimize the risk of lawsuit through proper planning and
prevention. Participants will practice drafting rules and
procedures with liability concerns in mind, and will develop
strategies for dealing both with lawyers and with potential
complainants. (.5 CEUs)

Technical report cataloging often requires special attention to
such bibliographic information as report numbers, contract and
sponsorship relationships, or detailed dates. In some cases,
even determining the correct form of the main title or the
appropriate main entry can be a challenge. Workshop will cover
descriptive cataloging and MARC tagging of monographic and
serial technical reports. Issues associated with the
organization, classification, subject analysis, and authority
control will be covered. Numerous examples will be presented
to demonstrate cataloging practices, and exercises will be
available to allow participants to apply the concepts covered.
