SERIALS CATALOGER FOR THE MAINE NEWSPAPER PROJECT
(LIBRARIAN II)
This is a 22-month professional cataloging position to
provide OCLC/CONSER original serials cataloging, name
authority control, and holdings information for
approximately 1500 Maine newspaper titles as part of the
National Endowment for the Humanities Maine Newspaper
Project. The majority of titles will be cataloged from
originals at newspaper repositories within Maine, with the
remaining titles to be described from the microfilm
copies. This librarian will be responsible for the
coordination and scheduling of activities required in
creating cataloging and holdings records for the Project.
This will be a full-time project position. The
current grant runs through June of 1996; there is a
possibility that the cataloging will not be complete at
that time and the position might be extended. The person
will work under limited supervision of the Project
Coordinator at the Maine State Library, and in cooperation
with the Head Cataloger. S/he will provide supervision,
training, and evaluation for one full-time Library
Assistant. Travel will be required to access collections
around the state.
Experience and qualifications:
Master's degree from a library science program (or an
acceptable equivalent combination of education and
experience); familiarity with OCLC, AACR2, LC Rules
Interpretations, LCSH, and other bibliographic reference
tools. A year of original serials cataloging experience
using OCLC is required. The ability to lift 40 pounds is
required.
Preferred qualifications:
OCLC/CONSER newspaper cataloging experience on OCLC;
familiarity with the CONSER Editing Guide and the USNP
Cataloging and Union Listing Manual; ability to establish
and maintain effective working relationships; supervisory
experience; and, good vision.

NOTICE OF VACANCY

TITLE: Serials Cataloger
The Serials Cataloging Section is one of five sections in the
Serials Division and is composed of the section head, 2.25 FTE
librarians and 3 FTE classified staff. The Serials Cataloger
reports to the head of the section and is responsible for
cataloging and classifying serials in a variety of subjects,
languages and formats using AACR2 revised, LC and NLM
classifications, LCSH and MeSH; for carrying out bibliographic
maintenance in the local online database; and for resolving
complex serial cataloging problems. Along with the section head,
the Serials Cataloger takes a lead role in cataloging and
formulating bibliographic control and access policies for
electronic serials and computer software. The Libraries is a
participant in CONSER and NACO and uses OCLC as its primary
bibliographic network for cataloging. The Serials Cataloging
Section has instituted a team oriented approach to cataloging.
The Libraries recently completed the implementation of an
Innovative Interfaces system (for acquisitions, circulation,
cataloging and maintenance and serials control) and BRS based
online catalog with graphical and character cell interfaces. A
major serials control conversion project is currently underway.
Catalogers work in a highly automated and networked environment.
As the Libraries undertakes new initiatives to move toward the
electronic library, it seeks an individual who is comfortable
working in a changing environment, is knowledgeable about
bibliographic control of printed serials, has a keen interest in
bibliographic access issues for electronic serials and other
networked resources, is flexible and capable of developing the
skills and knowledge base needed to function effectively in the
evolving electronic library.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association required.
2. Minimum of two years of serials cataloging experience
required, preferably in an academic or research library.
Working knowledge of AACR2 revised, Library of Congress
classification and subject headings and the MARC format
required. Knowledge of National Library of Medicine
classification and MeSH desirable. Experience with
cataloging of electronic formats desirable.
3. Experience with a national bibliographic utility, preferably
OCLC, and a local online system required.
4. Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages required.
5. Demonstrated ability to work with all levels of staff and
participate in a shared decision-making environment
required.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
Analytical and problem solving skills required.
7. Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
8. Ability to function well in a changing environment, to work
effectively within a large, decentralized organization and
to exercise initiative required.
SALARY:
$27,000 minimum. Starting salary dependent on background
and experience.
BENEFITS:
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in a CREF
retirement program on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued
at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the
rate of 12 working days per year. Premiums fully paid for
medical, dental and life insurance plans. No state or local
income tax.
