ALCTS e-Forum: Budget Cuts, Inflation, and Managing your Journal Collection

March 17-18, 2020

Moderated by Ellen Bosman and John Sandstrom

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!

Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, discussion begins and ends at:

Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

With journal prices forever spiraling up and materials budgets trending from flat to decreasing, choosing titles to deselect is a challenge many of us face on an annual basis. In this ALCTS e-Forum, we will discuss, among other topics, how widespread this issue is, what rubrics we use to make our decisions, models of decision making, and methods of communicating between various stakeholders and other groups both internal and external to the library.

Moderators

Ellen Bosman is Professor and Head of Technical Services at New Mexico State University. She has nearly 30 years’ experience in collection development and acquisitions.

John Sandstrom has been working in Acquisitions and Collection Development for over 30 years. His background includes Academic, Public, and Government libraries, as well as a brief stint working as a library vendor. He is currently the Head of Acquisitions at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

What Is an e-Forum?

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.
