ALCTS webinar: The IFLA LRM Model: A Brief Introduction

Description:

LRM (Library Research Model) is a new conceptual model that harmonizes several existing FR (Functional Requirements-based) models for library metadata creation such as FRBR, FRAD, and FRSAD and, with the release of the beta version of the newly redesigned RDA Toolkit in June 2018, has replaced FRBR as the primary conceptual model underpinning the RDA cataloging code. This webinar briefly outlines the structure of LRM, traces its emergence from the FR family of models, examines some key conceptual differences between LRM and FRBR, and discusses some of the important new entities, attributes, and relationships in LRM.

Learning outcomes:

This Webinar will:

• Give participants a high-level overview of LRM, familiarize practitioners with the model’s basic structure and to introduce them to some of its more important entities, attributes, and relationships.

• Show how LRM grew out of previous models and is in continuity with them. The participants will learn that the new model incorporates many elements with which they are already familiar and so will come to feel a greater level of comfort with it.

• Discuss ways in which LRM defines certain core entities -- Work, Expression, Manifestation, and Item -- differently from FRBR. The participants will learn that, while the two models contain many similar elements, LRM reconceptualizes them and that one must be aware of these differences if one is to interpret the new model correctly.

• Introduce users to some of the key new entities and attributes in LRM -- in particular, the Nomen entity, the Representative Expression attribute, the Manifestation Statement, and the Nomen String attribute. The participants will be introduced to some of the innovative features of LRM that position it as a stronger conceptual support for the Linked Data environment than its predecessor.

Overall, the participants should come away from the seminar with a good sense of what LRM is, how it relates to conceptual models that they already know, and where it introduces new and innovative elements, so that they are able to approach LRM and the newly redesigned RDA Toolkit with greater confidence.

Who should attend?

Catalogers, metadata librarians, and technical services personal who wish to gain a solid understanding of the conceptual model that will, for the foreseeable future, serve as the intellectual basis for RDA.

Presenter:

Thomas M. Dousa is the Metadata Analyst Librarian at the University of Chicago Library. He holds an MLS from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a specialization in the history and theory of knowledge organization. He is interested in the emerging conceptual models used in cataloging.
