Environment:
Library Affairs provides comprehensive library services to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale population of 18,500 students in beautiful Southern Illinois.
Morris Library, the primary facility, was completely renovated and reopened in 2009. The building currently features over 200 computers, laptops to borrow, 14 study rooms, 2 computer classrooms and two additional floors featuring highly flexible, technology-rich,
collaborative spaces. The building houses nearly three million volumes, three and a half million microforms, and 43,000 currently-received periodicals and serials, as well as strong collections of online databases, maps, films, DVDs, and sound recordings.
Morris Library is a selective U.S. Federal Depository Library and an Illinois State Depository Library. As the center for academic support services on campus, Morris Library hosts SalukiTech (technology and computer support), the University Honors Program,
the Writing Center, Learning Support Services, Testing Lab, Math Lab, and Center for Teaching Excellence. Morris Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, Coalition for Networked Information, Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries
in Illinois, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, and Greater Western Library Alliance. Librarians at SIU Carbondale are faculty and are covered by collective bargaining.
Responsibilities:
This position reports to the Associate Dean for Distinctive Collections. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian’s responsibilities include managing the work of the
Cataloging Department, including directing and coordinating assignments of the staff responsible for cataloging at all levels, in all formats, and for all collections. Developing and implementing departmental goals, policies, procedures, services, and projects.
Managing, analyzing, and establishing departmental workflows and coordinating maintenance and accuracy of library holdings in the online catalog. Maintaining a high-level working knowledge of current national standards, practices, and trends in bibliographic
control. Participating in inter-departmental and library-wide activities and projects by regularly meeting with other departments to identify ways in which the skills of the Cataloging Department can be used to improve resource discoverability. Serving as
departmental resource on metadata and its application in the University. Serving on committees in the Library, the University, and professional organizations. Participating in the Library’s scholarly communication initiatives, including the population of
the Institutional Repository, OpenSIUC. Performs the librarianship, research, and service requirements for promotion and tenure as set forth in the Library Affairs Faculty Operating Paper. Works on special projects and other duties as assigned.
Required (minimum) Qualifications:

All Applicants must have:
o
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library science by date of appointment.
o
Knowledge of AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LC and Dewey classification, MARC formats, metadata schema and bibliographic and authority control.
o
Evidence of excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
o
Experience with bibliographic utilities.

Applicants for Assistant Professor must have:
o
Demonstrated potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for tenure including professional service and published research.
o
Two years’ experience in one or more areas of cataloging in an academic library or comparable environment.

Applicants for Associate Professor must have:
o
Demonstrated Academic / Scholarly Credentials commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (tenure track) in Library Affairs at SIU Carbondale.
o
Four years’ experience in one or more areas of cataloging in an academic library or comparable environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
·
Professional experience performing original and copy cataloging of textual and non-textual materials.
·
Supervisory experience and demonstrated skill in planning, problem solving, organizing, and coordinating the work of others.
·
Ability to support and enhance a diverse, collaborative learning and work environment.
·
Experience in a consortial environment and familiarity with consortial issues.
·
Experience with the technical aspects of integrated library systems, and with online bibliographic utilities.
·
Successful training experience.
·
Familiarity with current issues and trends with cataloging and metadata.
·
Demonstrated experience in pursuing creative solutions to library operations.
