Hello Dana,

We only use the 866 if we do not have an 853/863 pairing and we include the exact holdings for the 853/863 versus saying “incomplete volumes” , we do volumes, issue # & years whenever possible.

Instead of the 866, with the 853/863 we use an 842 note field.

For example, if we only get a particular that we only keep for a short period of time & we don’t retain them, so no 853/863 holdings, then we would create an 866 like this:

=866 \0$80$aLibrary retains current 3 months only in Current Periodicals.

As for the gift subscription information, code that in the 008 field – Acq Meth g

“analyzed” we put in an internal z note for staff and use

=866 \0$80$aSEARCH BY SPECIFIC TITLE/AUTHOR

Hope this helps,

Renee

Subject: [SERIALST] 863/866 Questions

Hello Serial Cataloger Colleagues,

I have a question about 863/866 usage that I hope someone can help with. I’m reviewing MARC holdings records which contain both 853/863s and also “bonus” 866 fields. For example:

=853  03$81$av.$i(year)

=863  30$81.1$a1-3$i1945-1954

=863  30$81.2$a5-15$i1967-1997

=866  \0$880$zIncomplete volumes: v.3 (1954), v.15 (1997)

=866  \0$892$zEach volume searchable by individual title.

=866  \0$xAnalyzed

=866  \0$xGift subscription.

My questions are:

1.       Are the 866$8 contents formatted correctly, where present?

2.       Is it correct to express $x and $z notes in 866 fields lacking $a contents. In the example above, how is this information best expressed? Should it be expressed in 863$x$z where appropriate? If so, would duplication of data (“Analyzed”, “Gift subscription”) be an issue, for example, in an ILS public display?

3.       Given the data above, how best to organize it?

Thank you for your advice!

Kind and warm regards,

Dana
