Receive periodicals daily as they come in the mail, handle claims, manage the parts of the ILS pertinent to serials in conjunction with the catalog librarian (or other librarian in charge of the system), make recommendations for journals to keep and cut (sometimes in liaison with faculty), track electronic access/registration/licensing, communicate with vendors, publishers and subscription agents, track and order any subscriptions not ordered through a subscription agent, track usage stats, handle weeding/shifting, manage binding and processing bindery shipments…I’m sure there’s other stuff but that’s what I can think of atm.

Our catalog librarian and I share tasks related to periodicals.  She tends to do the more complex catalog work.  I don’t do a lot with code but I do make patterns.

Subject: [SERIALST] Serials Assistant -- Job Description?

What all does a staff member in Serials do at your library?  I'm especially interested in any non-financial tasks.   I'm also interested in any tasks that you *wished* were done but currently aren't (for whatever reason).

Additionally, are there any tasks that a cataloguer (a librarian) would normally do but that now a staff member does?

I'd appreciate any input.

Thank you.
