Hi Andrew,

We do not create items/affix barcodes for every issue. We use the checkin function of the ILS (we have III) to predict the issues and track them as they arrive. We put a barcode on each bound volume, and we have one barcode for all the “current” (unbound) issues in the reading room for tracking use.

I will also say that all of these procedures are under review and discussion. One option put forward is to stop binding and move all retained issues to the open stacks unbound. If that is how we proceed, we may begin barcoding every issue. Decisions pending.

All the best,

Subject: [SERIALST] Item records for individual serial pieces vs. entire journal runs

Hi All,

Does your library affix barcodes and create item records for every physical piece in your journals collection?  Or do you rather go with an item record for each separate journal title run?

I wonder about practices at other libraries, whether economy of labor or thoroughness generally wins out.

If you don't mind dropping me a line or sharing generally with the list here what your practices are, with any thoughts on the topic, please respond.

Thanks much.
