Dear Colleagues,

Would any of you have advice about whether smart barcodes can be used efficiently for mass retrospective itemization of serials? We will be starting a project to barcode many thousands of older serial volumes that were never previously itemized, and we are interested in options besides dumb barcoding, which is what we have been doing.

The literature from the 1990s suggests that some libraries settled on using smart barcodes for single volume monographs only, and used dumb barcodes for serials and multi-vol sets. Perhaps some of you have come up with more recent, improved solutions.

Many thanks in advance for sharing your insights!

Best wishes,
Celia
