Summary:
Lafayette College Library is seeking a technically proficient,
service-oriented, and attentive Serials Technician. As a member of the
Technical Services team, the job duties include a variety of procedures
in an integrated library system (ILS), maintaining and tracking
administrative and budgetary files, and independent problem solving.
This position requires that the employee have strong knowledge and
experience in a library technical services environment. Outstanding
candidates will also have a broad understanding of academic library
serials, a commitment to responsive and proactive service, and ability
to thrive in a rapidly-changing environment.
Description of Duties:
This position manages the continuing resources of the library,
including print and electronic periodicals, publisher packages, database
subscriptions, and monographic print standing orders. As such, the
position includes the following:
- Keep accurate and consistent records of library subscriptions and expenditures
- Track and process serial and standing order acquisitions and renewals
- Process individual title and package renewals with multiple vendors and publishers
- Work closely with subscription agents to maintain subscriptions and collections
- Verify invoices for payment
- Monitor periodical budget and create budget reports
- Proactively troubleshoot, resolve, and escalate online access issues
- Maintain serial holdings in OCLC and other systems
- Manipulate catalog database records for print and electronic resources
- Check in periodicals in the ILS
- Manage semi-annual binding of print periodicals
- Physically process print and bound serials
- Order and/or claim replacement issues for missing items
- Withdraw selected print serials from the library collection
- Assist with special projects and other duties as needed
Qualifications:
- Experience working in an integrated library system (ILS), preferably Innovative Interfaces Sierra
- Some working knowledge of serials cataloging standards, rules, and procedures including MARC format and CONSER
- Extremely detail oriented and a good problem solver with analytical
abilities, flexibility to prioritize multiple tasks, and independent
decision making
- Knowledge of budget and fund report structures and procedures
- Advanced office computer skills including spreadsheet functions and ability to access and modify records in a database
- Experience working with vendors, publishers, and subscription agents preferred
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
and communication with supervisors, associates, vendors, and the general
public
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Ability to maneuver filled library book carts on occasion
