The mission of the J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State is to empower its University constituency with lifelong learning skills to identify, find, evaluate, use and communicate information in promotion of excellence in scholarship, knowledge and understanding.

- Collaborating with departmental faculty in incorporating information competence into the curriculum to ensure that all SF State graduates are competent in locating, retrieving, organizing, critically evaluating, analyzing, synthesizing, and communicating

- Supporting excellent teaching and learning by providing equally for all university constituents on-site and remote access to relevant materials in support of the curriculum in any format, whether owned by/at JPLL or elsewhere;
- Encouraging through collections and access exploration of the broadest spectrum of viewpoints, constructs, cultures, beliefs and methodologies;
- Evaluating, selecting and teaching information sources and search strategies relevant to the SF State curriculum;
- Providing leadership to the University community in exploring and incorporating changing information technologies and formats;
- Supporting an understanding and appreciation of diversity through collections, programs, and instruction; and through recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and staff;
- Preserving cultural heritage through our unique primary source materials;
- Promoting, supporting and encouraging the transfer and sharing of information and knowledge within the broader community, and the sharing of intellectual and creative resources locally, regionally and internationally.

Position Summary*
Under the general direction of the University Librarian: Provide creative vision, expertise and leadership in areas related to patron access to the Library's physical and electronic collections, personnel, and building and facilities. Collaborate with Library
leadership and the greater university community to ensure that the Library's collection access goals, activities and services align with the mission of the Library, the University and the CSU.
Supervises operational areas of Circulation and Reserve Services, Shelving Facilities Management and the Library Retrieval System, Interlibrary Services, Building and Facilities, and Personnel, staff with responsibilities in these areas, and the Library's Graphic Designer who provides building signage, designs for the Library's web site, and produces a variety of print materials. Plays a leadership role in maximizing access to collections in Distribution Services units, to services throughout the building, and in coordination of building and facilities issues, including development of building and service hours for each period. Serves as an appropriate administrator for staff and faculty personnel issues and operations and in fostering staff and faculty professional development. Plays a lead role in developing Library assessment initiatives and communication and marketing strategies. Participates as a member of the Library Management Team, representing all of the above areas in policy, planning and management issues affecting these units as well as the library at large. Serves on appropriate library, university and California State University system committees.
Substitutes for the University Librarian as needed for operational oversight and representing the Library on campus and within the CSU.
Minimum Qualifications*
- Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university.
- Minimum five years of increasing administrative responsibility demonstrating leadership, supervisory skills, strategic planning, project management, services assessment and budgetary responsibilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collegially with internal and external campus constituents.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters in Library and Information Science or related field.
- Demonstrated experience managing building and facilities issues.
- Demonstrated experience handling personnel issues.
- Demonstrated experience with Library access services in an academic library.
Environmental/Physical/Special
May be required to respond to operational, building or facilities issues during evening or weekend hours or holidays.
