Jason,

We leave notes through out the library asking users to bring the book/serial to the Library Clerk every time is used. When the Library Clerk (me) sees the book on desk, she understands is an in-house circulation that needs to be entered.  I process it and the book goes back on display. No need to process all at the end of the year.  We have not have any problems with students nor student workers not complying with request.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

We shelve current issues of art journals outside the library in the art department.  When a new issue is published, we take it to the art department, and bring the old one back.  What methods do you use to keep statistics on journal use outside the library?

In the past, my predecessor stapled a small slip to the cover of the journals with a note saying to write a tally if you use it.  Then, when the journal comes to the library, it would be count-used in our system.

My concern with this, is I rely on work study students, and to be frank, I don't trust that they will remember to count use.

Also, at one time, he tried placing an index card behind each issue, again with a note asking for tally marks.  I think with these he would leave the cards at the art department for the entire year until it was time to count stats for our annual report.

My concern with this is that those checking out the journals will not see the card, but perhaps if it were large, maybe an 8.5x11 bright sheet.  I could make sure there is a pen nearby.

Thank you
