Hi Jason,

We sometimes wait a while before binding, in case the issue turns up, but in the end we do always bind our journals and re-bind at a later date if we are lucky enough to get our hands on the missing issue. It protects the issues from wear and tear and means they’re less likely to be misplaced.

We don’t add a sheet where the missing issue should be (though we may now!) but we do ask the binder to add the letters ‘IMP’ to the spine in order to indicate that the run is incomplete, IMP standing for imperfect. I don’t know when this practice started but I believe it’s a relatively standard one.

Sure, we do all the time as long as we’ve first make an effort to get the missing issues. You don’t want the issues you do have to get lost or damaged. You can print on the spine of the bound volumes what issues are missing. If through some miracle you do receive the missing issues in the future, just re-bind. That has been a really rare event for us.

Hi,

My predecessor left binding instructions which said if a volume is missing issues, you should not bind it.

We have several volumes of Life magazine that we were planning to bind, but I've found many issues missing from each volume (anywhere from 2-5).

Do you ever justify binding volumes with missing issues like this?
