ALCTS webinar: Care and Handling of Books and Scrapbooks


This session is part 2 of a 3-part series, Library Preservation Today, sponsored by the ALCTS Preservation & Reformatting Section (PARS)


Date: Wednesday, March 9, 2016

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.


Description: The second session of Library Preservation Today will provide an introduction to the structure and materials that make up books and scrapbooks, their safe storage and handling, and the implications for preservation and conservation. Low-cost, in-house preservation approaches will be discussed.


Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this series, attendees will:

1. Value preservation as a formal library function, and how it reflects and supports the institutional mission

2. Appreciate the primary role of preventive care, including good storage conditions, in extending the useful life of collections; and

3. Understand some of the challenges in preserving digital content and what the implications are for the future of scholarship.


Who should attend? Those who work in smaller to medium sized libraries, archives and historical societies.


Presenter: Donia Conn is a book and paper conservator and consultant for small and mid-sized cultural heritage institutions. She has worked in the fields of conservation and preservation for over 20 years. She teaches and consults on collections care and is adjunct faculty for the Simmons College School of Library and Information Science. She earned her BA in Mathematics from St. Olaf College and her MLIS with Advanced Certificate in Conservation from the University of Texas-Austin.
