I am astonished the linked Wikipedia article on academic publishing makes no mention of Henry Oldenbourg, founding publisher of the Philosophical Transactions. He published it for his own profit for decades.

The Royal Society stepped in (and added its name) 47 volumes later, 1753.

David A. Kronick, "A History of Scientific and Technical Periodicals," issued a great research monograph on the subject in 1962, via Scarecrow Press, Inc.

Best wishes,

Albert Henderson
former editor, Publishing Research Quarterly

Angela,

A few months ago I attended the presentation "Scholarly Communications in the Digital Age" by Dr. Vincent Lariviere who holds the Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication at the Universite de Montreal where he is associate professor of information science. He spoke of the two earliest academic journals that are noted in this wikipedia entry.
