A few months ago I attended the presentation "Scholarly Communications in the Digital Age" by Dr. Vincent Lariviere who holds the Canada Research Chair on the Transformations of Scholarly Communication at the Universite de Montreal where he is associate professor of information science. He spoke of the two earliest academic journals that are noted in this wikipedia entry.
