This is something which we have also debated at various periods. May I ask, how would users search for the item on your catalogue? Would they be able to find
the journal title under a Serials search?

those here depends on whether the item belongs in special collections OR if it’s a monographic series. Special collections have their own cataloging/shelving rules so to speak and it is likely to find journal issues shelved in with their book collections there.
If it is a monographic series we would shelve these with the books in the main collection.
We have three locations in our main collection for serial publications: one is for publications
that are published less than annual which do not circulate; the other is for annual publications which can circulate. The third location is for current periodicals and these are treated differently and consist of anything published recently.
Also, a while back we began to do collection analysis for dated serial publications
and are withdrawing journals for which we have less than 5 issues of the entire run.

Hello,
A staff member recently posed an interesting question. We were donated a copy of a journal composed or stories and poems. It's just one issue, and we have no
others. She would like this individual copy added to our collection, and asked if it should be cataloged and shelved with the periodicals or books.
My first inclination would be since it's a periodical, it should be cataloged and shelved with the periodicals. Are there any good arguments for shelving a single journal issue with a general collection of books?
